El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve, Mexico

Located in the highlands of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas, El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve established as a state park in 1972, a federal protected area in 1990 and later a UNESCO Man and the Biosphere site in 1993, is said to be one of the world’s most diverse forest reserves and is most definitely the most diverse reserve in Mexico. A refuge to thousands of plant species (43% of all species of fauna in Chiapas) and hundreds of animal species, many of which are endangered, and Mesoamerica’s largest continuous cloud forest, the biosphere reserve is a rare and valuable sanctuary requiring continued maintenance and protection.

El Triunfo is able to retain enough rainfall to produce up to 70% of the hydro-electricity for the entire country via the Rio Grijalva, a watershed found on the reserve. The dominant economic activities for the 14,217 inhabitants of the reserve include cattle ranching, coffee production, timber extraction, and small businesses.

As threats posed by the effects and practices of the above activities have become apparent, farmers, ranchers, and workers throughout the reserve are increasing their sustainable practices as they’ve realized the great effect their small actions have on the future of the wellness of the reserve and of their continued success. Shade grown coffee is one of the sustainable methods in practice that discontinues the slash and burn technique used to clear land for farming and provides a safe-haven for the abundance of plant and animal species.
