The Kogis have been cultivating coffee since the 1970's when they retreated to the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta trying to escape from their invaders or 'little-brothers'.  They found these plants in the lands they were retreating to and saw the value they had and decided to commercialize it.  Thanks to this crop they have been using the cash to reclaim lands that were taken away from them.
