Arnulfo Leguizamo is who every cafetero in Colombia should aspire to be: Inventive, innovative, collaborative, passionate, generous, and committed to quality.
He is a member of Asociación Los Naranjos, helping to spearhead a project we have developed over the years where we pay a premium for coffees that meet certain cup-quality specifications. In 2011, he won the first prize at the Cup of Excellence with coffee from this farm, Finca El Faldón. An unprecedented price of $45/lb was paid for the Cup of Excellence coffee, and with it, he promised his family he would take them to see the ocean. (He showed us the pictures to prove it).
Arnulfo is very proud to be a farmer. What he and his generation of cafeteros wants is recognition for their hard work and the means to sell their coffee as a traceable microlot, not to be lost in and among a blend. We met Diego, his son, at the Los Naranjos cupping lab, where he was training to be a cupper, and he plans to stay in the family business. That clearly indicates the impact and importance of the growing trend of farmers tasting their own coffee. We see an incredibly bright future for Arnulfo, his family, and for Asociació Los Naranjos in the future.
