Judges enjoying cake and coffee(Small).JPGFrom October 27th to 29th I was honored to be a part of the “Taza Dorada,” or Golden Cup, in Quito, Ecuador. This competition seeks to identify the best coffees of Ecuador and to show what Ecuador can bring to the specialty coffee market.

A group of international and national judges spent two days cupping twenty-six samples, which were then narrowed down to the top ten. Samples showing a variety of processing methods were submitted- fully washed, honeyed, and natural. An overwhelming amount of the samples had strong cocoa flavors and lower acidity, which all of the judges agreed would be perfect for espresso. The judges were surprised when they found a coffee with strong apricot notes on the cupping table, and we all waited in anticipation to learn who the producer of this coffee was during the awards ceremony.

The quality of the coffees submitted to Taza Dorada has increased substantially from the first competition four years ago, showing the great potential of Ecuador and the exciting future ahead. Café Imports hopes to bring Ecuadorian coffee to you – keep watch on our offerings!
