Located just 30km north of Nairobi, on the eastern Slopes of the Aberdare Ranges, is Riuki Coffee Factory. It is one of 5 factories operated by the Nyakiri Coffee Farmers Co-op Society. Nyakiri represents 2757 farmers (1000 active) producing 150,000 cherries on farms that are usually no bigger than .4 acres or 200 coffee trees. Five of these farmers form the representative committee that along with 45 permanent staff, over see the day to day management of the Co-op.
While the Coop is not certified the members are undergoing GAPS (Good Agricultural Practices) training with with SMS, a program established in 2007 to give farmers technical assistance, guide them to produce sustainably.
