This honey-processed lot comes to us courtesy of producer Bemal Ureña, a member of acooperative of smallholder coffee producers in the San Isidro de León Cortez region, the Union de Cafetaleros (UNDECAF) not only strives to produce some of the best coffees in the region, but also takes great strides in optimizing the natural renewable resources available in the area and minimize the environmental impact of farming and milling coffee. The co-op recently underwent a clean-energy initiative, installing 60 solar panels which provide electricity to the facilities, as well as a micro wind turbine to generate energy for lighting the co-op's campus. Undecaf's projects with solar energy are being closely monitored to see how viable a switch to solar could be for other smallholder coffee-grower groups.
