Do you love coffee? Are you interested in coffee flavor and quality development? Are you excited about working with producers and roasters to identify the best Costa Rican coffees in the world?

Cafe Imports is looking for a sensory analysis assistant to join our small and fast-growing team. This person will have a wide range of responsibilities, including attending to the daily operations of the cupping lab and green-coffee storage and roasting room. We are looking for someone who is organized and considerate with a strong sense of customer service and interest in sensory science. This will be an exciting role, and the successful candidate will be encouraged to develop professionally as an individual as well as to help grow the office.

Our ideal candidate has been working in the coffee industry for at least 1–2 years and has a knowledge of cupping and quality control. They will have English language proficiency and availability to travel.

The person in this position will work under the supervision of the green-coffee buyer and the green-coffee buyer’s associate and will handle many of the day-to-day sensory analysis needs of the Cafe Imports Costa Rica office. As part of a small team in a growing export-import office, the ideal candidate will be a friendly person who is able to multitask, remain organized, wear several hats when necessary, and overall be a team player with strong attention to detail and communication skills. Must be passionate about specialty coffee.

This is a full-time entry-level position and we are looking to hire immediately. Salary will be determined based on experience.

Responsibilities

Manage sensory analysis cuppings
Roast coffees and prepare cupping tables
Plan cupping agenda
Manage cupping data sheet and maintain key information in our databases (scores, notes, etc.)
Organize the cupping room and laboratory
Coordinate the cupping needs
Liaise with U.S. sensory analysis department
Record moisture content and density of incoming coffees
Maintain a safe and professional environment in cupping lab and green-coffee storage room
Process samples requests
Collect samples at farms and mills
Ensure coffee samples meet quality standards established by Cafe Imports
Ship green-coffee samples to Cafe Imports offices and to customers internationally
Keep inventory of samples
Organize samples based on their status: Pre-shipment Samples, Offers, Types, etc.
Oversee stock of shipping supplies, sample bags, and sample labels.
Assist the Costa Rica logistics team
Document FDA requirements, and arrange phytosanitary permission to ship samples
Maintain a presence among the coffee community
Be willing and able to give roasting and cupping classes
Support company’s objectives relating to confidentiality

Job Requirements

1–2 years’ specialty-coffee experience
Have a car/moto and a valid driver’s lisence
Understand the SCA cupping protocol
Verbal and written fluency in both Spanish and English
Strong attention to detail
Self-starter with excellent problem-solving abilities
Self-motivated, proactive, and organized
U.S. visa is a plus
Must currently live in Costa Rica and have up-to-date work permission if not a Costa Rican citizen
Must be willing and able to travel to Cafe Imports’ offices in the U.S.A
Available to start working as soon as possible.
Q-grader certification is a plus (not required)
