Finca El Retiro was founded in 1965. During the first 12 years, the farm consisted of only 5 hectares belonging to Don Francisco Hernández, who later sold it to Santiago Argüello Velasco in 1977. Since then, El Retiro has been property of the Argüello Campos family, and it has been managed with a great respect and care for nature.
This farm grew to a total of 250 hectares, of which 75 are planted with coffee trees and currently producing. In 1985, Enrique Argüello Hernández, Don Santiago's son, became the owner of the farm, keeping the tradition of growing shade-high grown coffee, but focusing on improving the quality of the coffee and increasing the productivity. In 2000, one of his four children, Santiago Argüello Jr.,decided to help his father manage the farm along with his sister Rosaura Argüello.
